TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Embarking on a journey as a migrant worker can present a great opportunity to secure a higher income and gain international work experience. Numerous factors influence an individual's decision to pursue employment abroad.
Indonesia is a country with a substantial number of migrant workers, predominantly employed in informal sectors such as plantations and domestic service. Regulations regarding these workers are stipulated in Law No. 18 of 2017 concerning the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers.
Thorough preparation is crucial to ensure a smooth and safe journey and a successful experience working overseas. Here are some key considerations for those contemplating becoming a migrant worker:
As quoted from the Migrant Worker Resource Center's official page, before making the decision to work abroad, carefully evaluate the following:
1. Motivation
"What are the reasons driving your desire to work abroad?" This introspection is crucial to understanding your goals and expectations.
2. Comparative Analysis
Conduct a thorough comparison of the advantages and disadvantages of working domestically versus internationally.
3. Information Gathering
Seek comprehensive information about the rights and obligations of migrant workers, the complexities of the migration process and its potential risks, the benefits and drawbacks of being a migrant worker, and financial planning strategies.
4. Firsthand Accounts
Consult with friends, relatives, or the local District Manpower and Transmigration Office (Dinsosnakertrans) to gather insights from those with firsthand experience as migrant workers.
5. Due Diligence
Exercise caution when dealing with sponsors or unscrupulous Private Employment Agency (PPTKIS) agents, even if they are relatives or acquaintances.
