TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Elon Musk-owned social media platform X officially launches the latest version of its Android app, which has been rebuilt from scratch after going through nearly a year of development. The update is claimed to bring improvements in loading, scrolling, the notification system, and several other aspects.
The latest Android version is available for download on Monday, July 20, 2026. Previously, X admitted that their Android app lagged behind the iOS version, prompting the company to decide on a complete rebuild of the app, instead of just updating it.
X Product Head Nikita Bier referred to the project as one of the company's biggest engineering projects ever. He stated that the new Android app is designed to enable the development of various new features to be done more quickly.
"It’s faster, smoother and more reliable. But most of all: it will enable us to build new features at lightning speed," wrote Bier on X.
One Year in the Making
According to a Tech Crunch report, the development of the app started nearly a year ago. Last August, Bier said X assembled a "dream team" for Android to overhaul the user experience. A few months later, he also revealed that October became one of the periods with the largest number of Android downloads in X's history, making the development of the new app a priority for the company.
The launch of the new Android app also has the potential to attract more users in the global market because Android is still the most dominant mobile operating system. This move was made after for years the X Android app was considered to have received less attention, and even experienced disruptions to the extent that users could not load X posts when opening links.
What Are the New Features?
Citing Gadgets360, some of the new features on X's revamped Android app include a dock at the bottom—similar to the iOS app—with a dedicated button for X Chat in the bottom right corner.
The new app also allows users to choose from a variety of topics to pin their interests at the top, without replacing the "For You" and "Following" timelines.
However, Bier admitted that there are still several improvements being worked on, including improving performance on older Android devices and introducing support for Spaces, X's live audio feature.
In addition, X will also bring several other features to Android in the near future, such as a new video editor, the "react-with-video" feature, cashtags, and custom timelines. Android users can obtain the latest version of the app by updating the app through the Google Play Store.
