TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra stated that the government respects KPK’s decision to detain Hasto Kristiyanto in connection with the alleged bribery and obstruction of justice case related to the interim replacement (PAW) of a House of Representatives (DPR) member. According to Yusril, KPK operates as an independent law enforcement institution; therefore, the government cannot and will not intervene in any of its cases.
“This includes their authority to detain individuals, impose travel bans, and other legal actions. We respect KPK’s decisions,” Yusril said at the Presidential Palace Complex in Central Jakarta on Thursday, February 20.
Yusril emphasized that KPK has the authority to detain suspects and prevent them from leaving the country as part of its legal mandate.
KPK officially detained Hasto on Thursday, February 20. During a press conference streamed on KPK’s YouTube channel, he was seen wearing the commission’s signature orange detainee vest.
Earlier that day, Hasto appeared for questioning by KPK investigators after receiving a summons. He was interrogated as a suspect in the alleged bribery case involving General Elections Commission (KPU) commissioner Wahyu Setiawan and fugitive KPK suspect Harun Masiku, as well as in the obstruction of justice case.
Commenting on the summons, Hasto claimed that the legal proceedings against him had political undertones. He pointed to irregularities in a pretrial hearing he previously filed with the South Jakarta District Court, alleging witness intimidation aimed at implicating him in the case.
The court rejected his pretrial motion, citing a lack of legal clarity and ruling it as vague and inadmissible.
Despite believing his summons to be politically motivated, Hasto stated that, as a disciplined and law-abiding PDI Perjuangan cadre, he would comply with the legal process. “Even with the circumstances, I will still attend the summons with my legal counsel,” he said.
On December 24, 2024, KPK named Hasto a suspect in the bribery case involving fugitive Harun Masiku. Hasto and Harun allegedly bribed KPU commissioner Wahyu Setiawan to secure Harun’s appointment as a DPR member, replacing the late Nazarudin Kiemas, a PDI Perjuangan legislative candidate.
Six individuals have been named suspects in this case: Hasto, Harun, Wahyu, former Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) member Agustiani Tio Fridelina, PDI Perjuangan cadre Saeful Bahri, and party-affiliated lawyer Donny Tri Istiqomah.
Wahyu, Saeful, and Agustiani have already been convicted and served their sentences. Meanwhile, Donny was charged alongside Hasto in the latest legal proceedings.
