TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that United States President Donald Trump had agreed to license the production of the Patriot missile system for Ukraine.
In an interview with Fox News on Tuesday, July 28, Zelenskyy said this was a follow-up to the discussions that took place during the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, in early July.
"We began it in Ankara to give Ukraine licenses for the production of Patriots. This is important, because we need more and quicker," Zelenskyy said, as quoted by ANTARA.
He also said that Trump agreed to the request when they met at the White House. "Today, we had a very good meeting with President Trump. He accepted that he will give us licenses," Zelenskyy said.
After receiving the green light from Trump, Zelenskyy immediately met with officials from several major U.S. defense companies to explore production cooperation.
"I hope that we will do co-production. This is very important," he said.
Earlier, on Tuesday, while speaking to reporters at the Capitol Building, Zelenskyy said he had conveyed Ukraine's urgent need for air defense to Trump and U.S. senators.
"The real problem is anti-ballistic systems and anti-ballistic missiles," he said. He also confirmed that he would discuss the issue with Trump.
