TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Thirteen people died in swimming accidents in Germany over the weekend amid a heat wave that sent many people to lakes and rivers to cool off, local media reported on Sunday, June 28, citing ANTARA.
According to the police, a 27-year-old man drowned in the Neckar River near Heidelberg on Saturday. Then, a 30-year-old man died while swimming in a lake near Neuhofen, which is located south of Mannheim. Additionally, two men died in separate incidents in Berlin, the German News Agency (DPA) reported.
A 6-year-old child died in the Herner Meer area on the Rhine-Herne Canal in North Rhine-Westphalia. Police also found the body of a 40-year-old man in the Hesse region at Lake Waldsee in Raunheim, southwest of Frankfurt.
On Friday, a 45-year-old man was pulled from the water by visitors at Seepark Lunen near Dortmund, but he later died in hospital, police said.
Police also said an 8-year-old boy was found dead after a two-hour search in a swimming lake in Isernhagen near Hanover. According to initial reports, the child had been swimming before drowning.
The bodies of two elderly men were also found in Lake Constance on Friday after they had disappeared the day before when they jumped into the lake in front of their wives.
Germany has experienced several hot days, with temperatures reaching above 40 degrees Celsius. There has been a slight drop in temperatures at night in some areas.
This prolonged heat wave is making life even more difficult for vulnerable groups. Additionally, jumping straight into cold water during extreme weather can put a heavy burden on the circulatory system.
