TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Special Capital Region Environmental Agency noted a reduction of 297.77 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions during the Earth Day action on Saturday, April 26, 2025. The decrease came after lights were turned off for 60 minutes from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm WIB (Western Indonesian Time).
The reduction in carbon emissions was calculated based on data from the Jakarta Metropolitan Distribution Main Unit of PLN (State Electricity Company). "From this blackout, savings of Rp538,599,843 were obtained based on the electricity savings of 372 MWh," said the Head of the Jakarta Special Capital Region Environmental Agency, Asep Kuswanto, in a written statement.
The blackout targeted street lights on protocol roads, five arterial roads in the city, and iconic locations in Jakarta such as the National Monument, the Arjuna Wiwaha Statue, the Selamat Datang Statue at Bundaran HI, the Pemuda Statue, the Jenderal Sudirman Statue, as well as several government buildings up to the City Hall.
Asep Kuswanto stated that this warning is also part of the efforts to socialize Jakarta's target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent by 2030. Such actions are encouraged to be done several times apart from commemorating Earth Day, in order to familiarize the public with energy conservation in their daily lives.
"The blackout action resulted in significant savings compared to previous actions that were held," he said.
Compared to the previous year, the reduced carbon emissions were 70.67 tons, which is less than a quarter of what was achieved this year. The electricity cost savings reached Rp120,121,280, calculated based on the electricity savings of 83 MWh at a price of Rp1,444.70 per KWh.
Although the scale is still relatively small, Asep is confident that this action will have a great impact on the continuation of Earth if done on a massive scale. Other energy-saving actions can also be implemented by using energy-efficient electronic devices and turning off lights or other electronic devices when not in use.
"If done consistently, we can create a cleaner and more sustainable Jakarta," he said.
