TEMPO.CO, Medan -- As many as 27 houses in Hutanagodang Village, Muara, North Tapanuli, were completely devastated by a massive blaze on Wednesday, March 26, 2025. Located adjacent to Lake Toba, strong winds blowing across the body of water exacerbated the fire, consuming the houses in the tourist village, as reported by the head of the North Tapanuli Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Bonggas Pasaribu.
"The nearby residents were unable to extinguish the fire. They also did not have time to salvage their belongings from inside the houses," said Bonggas Pasaribu on Wednesday, March 26, 2025.
The local government has requested assistance from Angkasa Pura Badara Silangit fire trucks and the fire department of Humbang Hasundutan Regency, which were closer to the location of the fire. "However, the fire could only be put out around 1.5 hours after it was ablaze," he said.
Currently, according to Bonggas, the families of the fire victims have sought refuge in the houses of their relatives near the site. The BPBD of North Tapanuli has also established tents and a public kitchen for the victims. "Food and drink for the fire victims have been prepared. The regent and vice regent, along with the police chief, are currently at the refugee center to observe the condition of the victims," said Bonggas.
Separately, the Head of Public Relations of the North Tapanuli Regional Police, Police Inspector First Class Walpon Baringbing, stated the exact cause of the fire is under investigation. He mentioned that the crowded arrangement of the residents' houses and the semi-permanent building materials made it difficult to extinguish the fire. "The fire rapidly grew and spread, so the residents near the location were unable to put out the fire," said Walpon.
No casualties were reported due to the fire, but the estimated material losses reached billions of rupiah. "The North Tapanuli Regional Police are still documenting the houses and items burnt to prevent conflicts over ownership claims," said Walpon. The Forensic Team is also investigating the source of the blaze.
