TEMPO.CO, Jakarta The French Embassy through the Institut franais d'Indonsie (IFI) is holding the 27th French Cinema Festival. The festival is being held in 14 cities across Indonesia from November 21 to December 2, 2025.

The opening of the 2025 French Film Festival was held at Djakarta Theater, Central Jakarta, on Thursday night, November 21, 2025. During the event, the film 13 Days, 13 Nights directed by Martin Bourboulon premiered in Indonesia.

The French Ambassador to Indonesia, Fabien Penone, explained that this year's festival coincides with the celebration of the 75 years of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and France. According to him, films serve as a platform to strengthen the cooperation between the two countries.

Penone explained that Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and French President Emmanuel Macron are committed to exchanging knowledge and culture. "Films are one way to further tighten the relationship between the two countries," said Penone during the opening.

The French Embassy together with IFI chose 13 Days, 13 Nights as the opening film for the 2025 French Cinema Festival. The film directed by Martin Bourboulon is a flagship French film that was just released this year.

The film 13 Days, 13 Nights tells the story of the rescue mission of French citizens and Afghan refugees when the extremist Taliban group took control of Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, in 2021. The story is based on true events.

Mohamed Bida, a senior French police officer in Kabul, had to make a major decision based on humanitarian values. In order to save French citizens and hundreds of Afghan refugees, he even dared to negotiate with the Taliban at gunpoint.

Based on Tempo's observation, the attendees of the opening of the French Cinema Festival welcomed this film. The cinemas resounded with applause after the film was shown.

Held in 14 Cities

The French Cinema Festival is not only held in Jakarta. In addition to the capital, several other cities also host this festival, including Ambon, Bandung, Denpasar, Lampung, Makassar, Medan, Pontianak, Purwokerto, Salatiga, Semarang, Surabaya, Surakarta, and Yogyakarta. At least 20 films will be screened at the Cinema XXI, IFI, Alliance Franaise (AF), and other partner locations.

The French Cinema Festival celebrates artistic innovation, emotions, and discoveries in the world of film. This year's edition also highlights Indonesian talents. Actress Marissa Anita has been appointed as the Festival Ambassador and director Joko Anwar as a special guest.
