TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Director General of Corrections of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights stated that they are currently pursuing 35 out of a total of 49 inmates who escaped from the Kutacane Correctional Institution in Southeast Aceh on Monday, March 10, 2025. The spokesperson of Ditjenpas, Rika Aprianti, confirmed the escape of the dozens of inmates.
"The escape attempt by the inmates of the Kutacane Prison did happen, and it has been handled and controlled by the prison authorities in cooperation with the police, military, and regional government," said Rika in a written statement on Tuesday, March 11, 2025.
Rika mentioned that the Regent of Southeast Aceh was present to directly communicate with the inmates at the Kutacane Prison. It was reported that a total of 49 inmates had escaped, 14 had been recaptured and surrendered, while 35 others are still being pursued.
The inmates' escape occurred on Monday evening, March 10, 2025, just before iftar. In a video recording, dozens of men were seen running in disarray, jumping over the fence, and some even going through the open gate onto the busy roadside crowded with street vendors.
The escaped inmates were wearing t-shirts and shorts, and some were shirtless. They were seen running through anything in their path, including pushing through stalls of vendors along the roadside in front of the prison.
A woman in the video was shouting, "Oh God, Oh God, that's a prison, everyone is escaping, Oh my Lord." Several individuals were seen being apprehended. However, the exact number of escapees and those who have been captured is yet to be confirmed.
