TEMPO.CO, JakartaDepression is a mental health problem experienced by many people, not only in Indonesia but also throughout the world. Some cases of depression even lead to desperate actions by people to end their lives, and not a few also take the lives of their family members, such as several cases that have occurred recently.

Depression is not just a problem of excessive sadness. In many cases, people with severe depression even look like other normal people. They remain productive at work, are helpful friends, loving parents, but deep down they are unhappy.

Judith Joseph, a psychiatrist at New York University and author of the soon-to-be-published book High Functioning: Overcome Your Hidden Depression and Reclaim Your Joy, said many of her patients, especially women and minorities, remain active even though they are depressed. Before symptoms develop into severe depressive disorder, sufferers may show signs and symptoms of depression that are hidden.

"If you want to continue doing what you love to do and living with your loved ones, it is important to understand your silent struggle," she told HuffPost.

Here are signs that you are experiencing depression that are subtle but need special attention:

1. Overworking

Work can be a way to continue functioning normally. Tanisha Ranger, a psychologist in Nevada, United States, admitted to having experienced this. "I wake up in the morning, go to work, do a good job, come home, and go to bed immediately. I don't do anything outside of work. I just interact with coworkers and clients," she said.

2. No longer enjoying activities that were once very popular

Anhedonia is a reduction in feelings or pleasure in things that were once very popular and is a sign of depression. For example, no longer enjoying favorite foods or gathering with people close to you.

3. Loss of motivation

People may see this symptom as laziness but not Ranger. According to her, this attitude is not due to laziness but a loss of motivation. You may want to complete tasks but feel like you have no more energy.

4. Sacrificing yourself to please others

People-pleasing behavior is a characteristic of hidden depression. Sufferers do not want to disappoint others. "They don't want to lose their role as someone who can do many things because that's how they feel valuable," said Joseph.

5. Not feeling good enough as a person

Ranger says people with depression can have a mindset that they are not good enough. So, even though they appear to be doing well on the outside, people with depression still feel helpless.
