TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - As the spring season arrives, colorful tourist destinations often become the choice for travelers seeking seasonal vacations. Washington, DC is one of the most iconic places to see thousands of cherry blossoms bloom in the United States. Besides the capital, America's country has other places to witness colorful flowers, ranging from wildflower fields to expansive tulip fields in the mountains.
Quoting USA Today, there are seven flower garden destinations in the United States, here are the lists.
1. Boone, North Carolina
The varying altitude of Boone results in irregular blooming of wildflowers in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The lower areas create the spring beauty of Carolina, trillium, and dwarf iris in early spring, fiery azaleas in the higher areas, mountain laurels, and catawba rhododendrons in May and June.
If you are interested in seeing wildflowers, explore the Tanawha Trail, a popular trail that traverses the slopes of Grandfather Mountain, or hike the Boone Fork Trail, a looping trail with meadows, streams, and rhododendron tunnels. The best time to visit Boone is between April and June.
2. Finger Lakes, New York
The Finger Lakes region is where magnolias and lilacs grow. For a more intimate experience, travelers can stroll through the Sonnenberg Gardens and Mansion Historical Park, which combines landscape and flower gardens with horticultural history. In late April, the Orchid Show and Plein Air Showcase allow orchid enthusiasts to study flowers and plein air art exhibitions. The best time to visit here is from April to June.
3. Columbus, Ohio
Every year, the Greater Columbus Cherry Blossom Festival features over 5,000 cherry blossom trees through various events, from exhibitions to displays of pink and white blossoms. The Columbus Park of Roses is one of the places to witness charming flowers, a public rose garden in the U.S. with over 11,000 blooming roses in a 13-hectare oasis. The best time to visit here is from March to June.
4. Black Hills, South Dakota
Spring is the best time to witness the blooming of flowers in South Dakota, such as pasque flowers, prairie smoke, and purple coneflowers. Custer State Park and the Black Hills National Forest are grasslands filled with wildflowers contrasting against granite rocks. Traveling along the Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway showcases tiered waterfalls amidst wildflower meadows. If interested in vacationing here, the ideal time to visit is from April to August.
5. Picacho Peak State Park, Arizona
Picacho Peak State Park turns golden every spring, thanks to Mexican gold poppies and purple lupines covering the desert ground. The flowers bloom near the Superstition Mountains, creating a breathtaking view. February is the best month to see the beauty of flowers in this place. However, flower bloom depends on the local weather, so check the weather information regularly.
6. Carlsbad, California
Every spring, the hills of North San Diego County turn into a vast field of giant tecolote ranunculus flowers. The 55-hectare land is filled with bright flowers blooming from March to mid-May. Not just a flower field, tourists can enjoy various activities, such as strolling through the flower maze, tasting wine at sunset, practicing yoga, and flower crown workshops.
7. North Cascades National Park, Washington
The North Cascades National Park is home to 1,600 species of wildflowers. This park presents a range of spring flowers, shady forest floors, dry east side slopes, and Alpine mountain landscapes. The Thunder Creek Trail offers a moderate hike through dense forests, where salmonberries, Indian plums, and red-flowering currants bloom. The best time to visit here is from March to June.
