TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that a number of regions experienced minor tsunamis after a 7.4 magnitude earthquake off the Philippines on Friday morning, October 10, 2025. BMKG issued a tsunami early warning for North Sulawesi and Papua.
The regions experiencing the minor tsunami are as follows:
- ESSANG, Talaud Islands, North Sulawesi (04.46 126.73) 10-10-2025 09:08 a.m. WIB (Western Indonesia Time), hit with a 0.17-meter tsunami
- BEO, Talaud Islands, North Sulawesi (04.23 126.78) 10-10-2025 09:12 a.m. WIB, hit with a 0.05-meter tsunami
- GANALO, Talaud Islands, North Sulawesi (04.42 126.86) 10-10-2025 09:09 a.m. WIB, hit with a 0.05-meter tsunami
- MELONGUANE, Talaud Islands, North Sulawesi (03.99 126.67) 10-10-2025 09:06 a.m. WIB, hit with a 0.11-meter tsunami
- SANGIHE, North Sulawesi (03.59 125.56) 10-10-2025 09:29 a.m. WIB, hit with a 0.16-meter tsunami
- MOROTAI, North Maluku (02.38 128.66) 10-10-2025 09:46 a.m. WIB, hit with a 0.10-meter tsunami
- WEST HALMAHERA, North Maluku (01.67 127.58) 10-10-2025 09:42 a.m. WIB, hit with a 0.05-meter tsunami
The Director of the Earthquake and Tsunami Center at BMKG, Daryono, said the tremor hit 275 kilometers northwest of Karatung Island, Talaud Islands Regency, North Sulawesi, with a depth of 58 kilometers. "This earthquake is a shallow type, triggered by subduction activity, and had a thrust fault mechanism," said Daryono in a written statement.
The earthquake's shaking was strongly felt in several regions. In Tahuna, Sangihe, and Talaud Islands, the tremor was recorded at MMI scale IV, felt by many people indoors. Meanwhile, in Manado, people felt the shaking at II MMI, which means the tremor caused light hanging objects to sway.
Daryono said the earthquake prompted a tsunami alert in several regions, including the Talaud Islands, Bitung City, the southern part of North Minahasa, the southern part of Minahasa, and Supiori in Papua."Yes, we call it a minor tsunami," said Daryono, referring to the potential maximum wave of 0.5 meters.
