TEMPO.COJakarta - At least eight people have died in an explosion near the Red Fort in the capital of India, New Delhi, the police said.

A local television channel reported at least 20 people were also injured in the explosion on Monday night as reported by Al Jazeera. At least 15 of them are in critical condition.

Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha told reporters at the scene of the incident, as reported by Anadolu, that the explosion originated from a slow-moving vehicle that stopped at a traffic signal.

Golcha said the explosion occurred just before 19:00 local time.

"A slow-moving vehicle stopped at a red light. An explosion happened in that vehicle, and due to the explosion, nearby vehicles were also damaged," he told reporters, adding that the situation is being monitored.

India's Home Minister Amit Shah promised a thorough investigation into the incident.

"We are exploring all possibilities and will conduct a thorough investigation, taking all possibilities into account. All options will be investigated immediately, and we will present the results to the public," Shah said.

Local residents said they heard a "loud noise" when the explosion occurred.

High alert was sounded in Delhi following the explosion. The exact cause of the blast near the Red Fort metro station is not yet known.

Neighboring Uttar Pradesh and the financial capital of India, Mumbai, are on high security alert after the incident, according to Indian media reports. Similarly, locations in the vicinity, including the Indira Gandhi International Airport, are under heightened police surveillance, the Indian central police statement said.

In a video shared online, debris of several cars can be seen on the congested streets in Old Delhi as police were deployed to secure and disperse the gathering crowd.

The blast caused six vehicles and three autorickshaws to catch fire, according to the deputy chief of the New Delhi fire service.

Security Concerns Arise from the Explosion

The 17th-century Red Fort, once an imperial palace, is now a major tourist attraction.

Speaking to Al Jazeera, independent journalist Amit Baruah described the area as "one of the most crowded parts of the city," something that he said makes it "vulnerable" to attacks.

"It shatters the calm of the capital city," Baruah said, noting that Delhi has not experienced an explosion like the one on Monday for some time.

"This is an incident that will definitely cause concern to ordinary people living not just in that area but around," he said.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sympathy for the families of the victims.

"Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones in the blast in Delhi earlier this evening. May the injured recover at the earliest," Modi wrote in X.
