TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Attorney General's Office responds to President Prabowo Subianto’s statement calling to sentence corruptors to 50 years in prison. Head of the Attorney General's Office's Information Center, Harli Siregar, said Prabowo is entitled to the statement in his capacity as a head of state.
"It is the president’s philosophical thinking for public interest," said Harli when giving a media statement in the Attorney General's Office on Tuesday, December 31, 2024.
In contrast, law enforcers, including the Attorney General’s Office, must act within the guidance of operational standards instead of such philosophical ideas.
Harli agreed that in some cases, the sentences imposed in corruption cases were too light—Harvey Moeis’ case as the most recent one. However, law enforcement officers must refer to existing regulations while handling corruption cases. “Including the Corruption Eradication Law," said Harli.
At the same time, he said the public prosecutor had filed an appeal against Harvey Moeis' verdict. The panel of judges sentenced Harvey to 6 years and 6 months in prison, almost halved the prosecutor’s demand of 12 years in prison.
Amid the controversy, Prabowo asked the judges to impose appropriate punishments, especially in corruption cases. While the president did not refer to a specific case, it is believed the statement was linked to Harvey Moeis’ sentence.
“Please, the Minister of Corrections, the Attorney General, file an appeal. It should be about 50 years [imprisonment],” the president implored. “Let's all return to our identity on August 17, 1945, the ideals of our nation's founders.”
Prabowo Subianto asserted that the public understands the gravity of such matters. He pointed out that when corruption involving hundreds of trillions of rupiah is met with light sentences, the public suspects that convicted individuals are enjoying comfortable prison conditions, complete with amenities like air conditioning and refrigerators.
