TEMPO.CO, JakartaStreet food is one of the major reasons why tourists may revisit a destination. Agoda, the digital travel platform, shares a list of street food havens across Asia, where the cuisines draw travelers from around the world.

These cities, including Bangkok—which tops the list—not only offers unique flavors, but also serve as cultural gateways for visitors seeking a glimpse into local traditions through food.

Andrew Smith, Senior Vice President of Supply at Agoda, maintained that street food is the “heartbeat” of cities in Asia. Here are the seven cities that promise unparalleled culinary adventures, according to Agoda, as reported by Travel and Tour World.

1. Bangkok, Thailand

Food enthusiasts must not miss Yaowarat Road. As a culinary hub, the streets are filled with vendors serving guay jub, a savory and spicy pork noodle soup, alongside delicious seafood dishes like grilled shrimp and spicy crab curry. The city offers street food 24 hours a day, making it enjoyable at any time. The prices are also among the most affordable, so don’t fret about the myriad of choices as you can always purchase another.

2. Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Ho Thi Ky Street is a famous street food center in Ho Chi Minh City, despite being tucked away from the usual tourist trails. Here, travelers can taste banh trang nuong, Vietnam's version of pizza. Other delicious foods to try include grilled satay and che, a sweet and refreshing dessert enjoyed by the locals.

3. Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Don’t say you’ve traveled to Kuala Lumpur before stopping by Jalan Alor, the city’s well-known street food destination. Renowned for its blend of Malaysian, Thai, and Chinese influences, you can try numerous dishes, ranging from charcoal-grilled satay to wok hei-style fried noodles, cooked using a wok and high heat.

4. Osaka, Japan

With its deep culinary heritage and bustling market atmosphere, Osaka is dubbed the food capital of Japan. Kuromon Ichiba Market in Osaka is more than just a market. This place is a gastronomic haven showcasing the best of Japan's street food culture. From takoyaki, the octopus-filled dough balls, to okonomiyaki, the savory pancake, you can get an authentic taste in Osaka.

5. Seoul, South Korea

South Korea tops Agoda's Return Visitor Ranking survey, reaffirming its status as a leading food destination. In Seoul, Mangwon Market stands out as a must-visit culinary destination, where tourists can enjoy dishes like bindaetteok (mung bean pancakes), bibimbap (mixed rice with vegetables), and tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes).

6. Singapore

Lau Pa Sat, an iconic hawker center in Singapore, offers a blend of the city's multicultural culinary heritage. Its most famous attraction is Satay Street, where skewered meat is served with peanut sauce. In addition to satay, visitors can enjoy Singaporean staples like Hainanese chicken rice and har kway teow, a stir-fried noodle dish that encapsulates the culinary history of the city.

7. Taipei, Taiwan

A culinary exploration in Asia would not be complete without a stop at Taipei’s legendary night markets, the tourist-oriented Shilin and the authentic and older Raohe. Taipei’s night markets offer tourists a range of street foods typically found in Taiwan, from the iconic stinky tofu to grilled pork rice, a staple dish.

For the global travel industry, the growing interest in street food tourism signifies a change in the way people explore destinations. Food is no longer just a necessity but also a primary motivator in choosing travel destinations.
