TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - AirAsia is enforcing stricter regulations on the use and charging of power banks on all flights, effective April 1, 2025.
Eddy Krismeidi, Head of Indonesia Affairs and Policy at AirAsia, stated that the policy aligns with global aviation safety standards to enhance flight security and reduce battery-related risks during travel.
"All passengers are advised to ensure their power banks comply with the airline's policy before arriving at the airport to facilitate the check-in and boarding process," Eddy said on Friday, March 28, 2025.
Guidelines for Carrying Power Banks on Board
Eddy explained that, based on the International Air Transport Association (IATA) regulations on Dangerous Goods and the Circular Letter of the Director General of Civil Aviation No. SE 02 of 2023, passengers are allowed to carry power banks with a maximum capacity of 100 watt-hours (Wh) or 20,000 milliampere-hours (mAh).
For power banks with a capacity between 100Wh and 160Wh, prior approval is required.
Rules for Carrying Power Banks on Flights:
- Power banks must be stored in the seat pocket or under the seat.
- Power banks are not allowed to be stored in the overhead compartment.
- The use of power banks during the flight is not allowed.
- Power banks are prohibited from being used to charge portable electronic devices during the flight.
- Power banks must not be placed in checked baggage and must be carried into the cabin.
"To ensure compliance with this policy, AirAsia will install safety reminders at the check-in counters and strengthen dissemination through announcements during the boarding process and inside the plane," said Eddy.
AirAsia is fully committed to upholding the highest safety standards in line with industry best practices, in order to protect passengers, crew, and aircraft from potential risks.
"AirAsia appreciates the cooperation of all passengers in complying with these provisions as part of an ongoing effort to ensure a safer and more comfortable trip for everyone," said Eddy.
