Amnesty International Calls on Hungary to Arrest Israel's Netanyahu in Upcoming Visit

20 hours ago 11

TEMPO.CO, JakartaAmnesty International is urging Hungary to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The request comes following reports that Netanyahu is set to visit the EU member country on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, at the invitation of his Hungarian counterpart, Viktor Orban.

Netanyahu is the subject of an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court or ICC in November 2024 for Israel's actions in Gaza.

As reported by Arab News, Orban, a close ally of Netanyahu, has stated that he will not enforce the warrant. However, as a member state, Hungary is required to enforce arrest warrants issued by the ICC.

Erika Guevara-Rosas, the head of research, advocacy, and global policy at Amnesty International, stated that Netanyahu is an alleged war criminal. He is accused of using starvation as a method of warfare and deliberately attacking civilians. Additionally, Netanyahu is accused of being complicit in crimes against humanity, including murder, persecution, and other inhumane acts.

As an ICC member, Guevara-Rosas emphasized that Hungary should arrest Netanyahu if he travels to the country and then hand him over to the ICC.

According to Guevara-Rosas, any trip made by Netanyahu to an ICC member country that doesn't result in his arrest will embolden Israel to commit further crimes against the Palestinian people.

"Netanyahu’s reported visit should be seen as a cynical effort to undermine the ICC and its work, and is an insult to the victims of these crimes who are looking to the Court for justice" said Guevara-Rosas.

Guevara-Rosas stated that Hungary's invitation is a disregard for international law and confirms that suspected war criminals sought by the ICC are welcomed in EU member countries.

"Netanyahu’s visit to Hungary must not become a bellwether for the future of human rights in Europe," Guevara-Rosas added.

Guevara-Rosas urged European and world leaders to end their silence and indifference. The member of Amnesty International also called on world leaders to request Hungary to arrest Netanyahu during his visit there.

Guevara-Rosas stressed that Amnesty International calls on the ICC Prosecutor to investigate and prosecute all of Israel's crimes. "Powerful leaders, like Netanyahu, accused by the ICC of war crimes and crimes against humanity, must no longer enjoy the prospect of perpetual impunity," she concluded.
