TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Amnesty International Indonesia notes a growing number of death sentences being imposed in Indonesia, amid a record high execution rate in a decade last year. According to Amnesty's records, Indonesia hands down the death sentence every year; despite not carrying out any executions since 2016.
In 2024, Indonesian courts sentenced at least 85 criminals to death, with the majority involved in drug cases. This brings the total number of people on death row worldwide to 28,085 by the end of 2024.
Amnesty International Indonesia Executive Director Usman Hamid considers what the Indonesian government is doing a kind of double commitment. “On the one hand, the government does not carry out executions, but on the other hand, judges continue to follow the global trend of imposing the death penalty, especially in drug cases,” Usman was quoted as saying in a press statement on Tuesday, April 8, 2025.
A total of 1,518 executions took place in 2024, according to Amnesty International's latest report titled “Death Sentences and Executions 2024” launched today. With that figure, 2024 became the highest period of executions, breaking the previous record of 1,634 cases in 2015.
The number of executions last year reflected a 32 percent growth from 2023, with 1,153 cases. A total of 15 countries carried out executions in 2024, dominated by countries in the Middle East and North Africa region.
Regarding the number of death sentences, at least 2,087 death sentences were handed down by courts in 46 countries in 2024. This number is lower than the 2023 data, which is at least 2,428 decisions in 52 countries.
Usman believes that the death penalty does not bring justice. On the contrary, he said, the death penalty creates more victims.
“By choosing abolition of the death penalty, Indonesia can realize a justice system that is fair, humane, and in line with the global trend to end the death penalty,” he said.
He compared Indonesia's policy with that of neighboring Malaysia. The country has abolished the mandatory death penalty for serious crimes. What's more, local authorities carried out commutations by changing the death penalty to other forms of punishment for more than a thousand convicts.
“Indonesia must follow Malaysia's example and must not lag behind its neighbors in terms of the death penalty,” said Usman.
