TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former Jakarta Governor, Anies Baswedan, attended the first trial of Thomas Trikasih Lembong, or Tom Lembong, who is implicated in a case of alleged corruption in sugar imports. The former Minister of Trade was previously part of Anies's success team in the 2024 presidential election.
Tom Lembong's legal representative, Ari Yusuf Amir, confirmed that Anies Baswedan would attend Tom Lembong's first trial. "Yes, that's the plan," he said when asked via a text message on Thursday, March 6, 2025.
According to Tempo's observation at the location, Anies Baswedan arrived at 09:20 local time. Wearing a dark blue shirt, he casually walked into the Central Jakarta District Court.
"I come as a friend of Mr. Tom Lembong," said Anies to the media. He mentioned that his presence was to witness the legal process of Tom.
Anies also expressed his hope. He hoped that the panel of judges would act carefully, objectively, and prioritize truth, legal certainty, and justice in deciding this case.
"Our hope is great," Anies said. "We highly respect it, we believe the panel of judges will be able to decide in accordance with the hope that we just conveyed"
As quoted from the Central Jakarta District Court Case Tracking Information System page, Tom Lembong's first trial was supposed to be held at 09:00 local time in the Prof. Dr. H. Muhammad Hatta Ali room. However, until 09:30 the room remained tightly closed.
