Apple Highlights Climate Commitment Through iPhone Recycling

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Vice President of Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives of Apple, Lisa Jackson, has reaffirmed the company's commitment to aggressively reducing carbon emissions. She emphasized that, in the face of the global climate crisis, tech giants are expected to do more than innovate sophisticated products; they must also consider how they can sustain the Earth.

Considering the critical condition of the Earth due to global warming and climate anomalies in various regions, exacerbated by extractive industrial activities that harm Earth's resources, Lisa's statement is highly relevant.

Lisa stated that Apple has achieved corporate carbon neutrality since 2020 by using 100 percent renewable energy for its office operations. However, she believes this action is insufficient for significantly reducing emission rates.

She mentioned the need for much stronger intervention across various sectors, including the supply chain. "Now we are setting even higher goals. What if we achieve carbon neutrality in all our products, all our suppliers, and even all our users? That is an extraordinary goal for the year 2030," said Lisa when interviewed in Bali on Thursday, December 11, 2025.

In concrete efforts to reduce emissions, Apple has transitioned its material sourcing strategy from conventional mining to recycled materials. The newly debuted iPhone 17 is one of the products that has implemented this initiative, using 30 to 35 percent recycled materials in its components.

The presence of recycled products stems from the Apple Trade-In program. In this program, old devices from consumers are sorted rigorously to enter the material recovery process. With this scheme, Apple aims to create future iPhone raw materials entirely from renewable or recycled materials from previous generation devices.

However, this method is not without challenges. It requires understanding from consumers and distributors in various countries to participate in this commitment. Lisa stated that they are pushing for a shared understanding of recycling concepts through 2030. "Consumers need to realize that the products they use should not harm the Earth. We have begun that process," she said.
