TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Digital ID feature, initially introduced with iOS 26, allows eligible United States citizens to incorporate their passport into the Wallet application (formerly known as Apple Wallet or Passbook). This functionality is now scheduled for release before the conclusion of 2025.
According to a review published by MacRumors on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, Apple has subsequently updated the precise release details for Digital ID on the iOS 26 feature overview page.
The footnote detailing the feature had previously only indicated that Digital ID would become available "through a software update," lacking a definitive timeline.
Notably, Apple has since removed the exact phrase "software update," yet the feature is still widely anticipated to be introduced via an incremental update, such as iOS 26.1 or iOS 26.2, before the year's end.
Currently, Apple has distributed the first beta of iOS 26.1 to developers, but support for the Digital ID remains absent. This circumstance has prompted industry speculation that the feature may be integrated and installed during a subsequent beta phase of the software.
Digital ID represents a significant expansion of the Wallet app's existing capability to integrate U.S. Driver's Licenses (SIM). This feature is designed to allow iPhone users in the U.S. to add their passport to the Wallet, enabling its use as a substitute for the physical document during domestic travel at Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoints, the national transportation security authority.
Similar to state-issued identification cards already in the Wallet, Digital ID can also be used for age and identity verification within apps, retail stores, and websites. The option to add a passport to the Wallet will significantly expand the digital identification feature to more iPhone users across the U.S. However, Apple has not yet commented on expanding this feature to other international markets.
