TEMPO.CO, JakartaApple Inc. has officially submitted a US$1 billion investment proposal to the Indonesian government. The proposal was received by the Directorate General of Metal, Machinery, Transportation Equipment, and Electronics Industries (Ilmate) at the Ministry of Industry.

“We cannot yet provide our assessment of the proposal, because it is subject to negotiation,” stated Ministry of Industry spokesperson Febri Hendri Antoni Arif to reporters at the ministry office in Jakarta on Monday, December 30, 2024.

Febri revealed that the proposal is similar to the one previously submitted by the American technology giant to the Ministry of Investment/Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM). He indicated that the investment proposal includes plans to establish manufacturing facilities for AirPods, Macs, and AirTags in Indonesia.

However, he explained that the ministry cannot publicly respond to the proposal at this time because Apple has not yet accepted their invitation for face-to-face negotiations. He noted that communication has so far been limited to informal exchanges via the WhatsApp messaging application. “The response has only been through WhatsApp. What we expect is for them to come here, to be physically present. Apple’s top executives,” he elaborated.

Formally, the government is still awaiting Apple's arrival at the Ministry of Industry for direct negotiations. Febri mentioned that the government has repeatedly extended invitations to Apple for these discussions, but they have not yet been accepted. “They have been invited here, but they never show up,” he remarked.

Previously, Apple had planned to invest US$100 million, or approximately Rp1.61 trillion (at an exchange rate of Rp16,146.25 per US dollar), primarily to meet the Domestic Component Level (TKDN) requirements mandated by the government. However, Minister of Investment/Head of BKPM Rosan Roeslani requested that they increase their investment commitment to US$1 billion, equivalent to Rp16.14 trillion.
