ASEAN Summit: Leaders Discuss Myanmar Behind Closed Doors

3 months ago 67

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto participated in a retreat session at the 46th ASEAN Summit held at the Conference Room, Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC), on Monday, May 26, 2025.

According to an official statement from the Presidential Secretariat's Bureau of Press, Media, and Information, this closed session allowed ASEAN leaders to discuss two primary issues: the implementation of the five-point consensus on Myanmar and an exchange of views on evolving regional and international matters.

During discussions on the five-point consensus, leaders also deliberated on the next steps following ASEAN's decision regarding Myanmar.

Yusuf Permana, Deputy for Protocol, Press, and Media at the Presidential Secretariat, stated that President Prabowo has engaged in extensive discussions with leaders of other friendly countries on this issue and has consistently advocated for an inclusive peace process.

Previously, in a bilateral meeting last November at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta, Indonesia and Singapore, represented by President Prabowo and Prime Minister Lawrence Wong respectively, agreed to ensure the implementation of the five-point consensus.

Furthermore, in his meeting with Thailand's Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra on Monday, May 19, 2025, Prabowo conveyed that Indonesia and Thailand share similar concerns about the ongoing conflict. The Head of State also expressed appreciation for Thailand's role in seeking a peaceful solution.

"We also emphasize the importance of inclusive national dialogue, which can achieve peace and stability in Myanmar," he remarked.

The second agenda item in the retreat session involved an exchange of views on strategic regional and global issues. In various meetings with friendly nations, Indonesia has consistently advocated for strengthening solidarity, as well as promoting mutual peace and prosperity within the Southeast Asian region.

The retreat session is a designated forum for ASEAN leaders to engage in more in-depth and strategic discussions. The outcomes of this session will form a crucial foundation for formulating joint policy directions.

Prior to the retreat, President Prabowo attended the plenary session of the 46th ASEAN Summit, which was officially opened by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim as the Chair of ASEAN 2025. The plenary session also took place at the Conference Room, Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Monday, May 26, 2025.

During the plenary session, ASEAN leaders discussed the topic of ASEAN community development and its future direction, alongside external relations and future strategic orientations.
