TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi has defended the screening of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto’s video in cinemas across the country before movie showings, saying it is a common practice.
“As long as it does not violate regulations and does not disturb comfort or aesthetics, this is a normal thing,” Prasetyo said in a written statement on Sunday, September 14, 2025.
The video, played before the main feature, highlights Prabowo’s achievements and claims of success in several government programs. It has sparked widespread discussion on social media, particularly on X.
In the video, Prabowo emphasizes his commitment to eradicating poverty in Indonesia and points to the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program, which he claims has reached 20 million beneficiaries since its launch earlier this year.
The video also highlights the establishment of 80,000 Red and White Village Cooperatives and the operation of 5,800 Nutrition Fulfillment Service Units (SPPG) nationwide.
It further presents figures on agricultural output, including total national rice production of 21.7 million tons up to August 2025, the cultivation of 225,000 hectares of paddy fields, and the export of 1,200 tons of corn earlier this year.
Some social media users expressed surprise at the decision to showcase the government’s claims in cinemas.
“Perhaps just a suggestion: achievements like this should also be backed by comparative data from research or studies, so the results feel more balanced,” wrote an X user under the handle @aldiv****, as seen by Tempo on Sunday.
Another user, @jisje****, said it would be better if the government publicized the achievements more broadly. “If it’s only in cinemas, not everyone gets to see it. It would be more transparent if shared through wider media,” the user tweeted.
