TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - As many as 25 people have reportedly died from the heat wave that has gripped the United States over the past week, while 40 million people are under heat warnings across the East, Southeast, and Southwest coasts.
As reported by NBC News on Sunday, July 5, citing local officials, and quoted from Anadolu, there have been 22 heat-related deaths in New Jersey, one in Illinois, and two in Mississippi.
Meanwhile, the National Weather Service (NWS) warned of thunderstorms with the potential for strong winds, hail, and localized flash flooding that could damage parts of the East Coast through Monday.
Flood warnings remain in effect for the 34 million residents of Delaware and Connecticut, as well as New York, where forecasters predict up to 7.6 centimeters of rain.
The severe storm also caused power outages affecting hundreds of thousands of customers in several eastern states.
The NWS stated that heat warnings will continue through Sunday night across the East Coast.
Heat index values, which reflect how hot it feels when humidity is combined with air temperature, are expected to reach 100°F (37.7°C) to 105°F (40.5°C) in Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Baltimore, Raleigh, Charleston, South Carolina, and Jacksonville, Florida.
Forecasters say temperatures across much of the East Coast will gradually decrease this week, with daytime highs generally ranging from 70-90°F (21-32°C).
However, extreme heat conditions are expected to continue into the middle of this week in some parts of the country.
An extreme heat warning has been issued for parts of California and Arizona, including Phoenix and Tucson, from Tuesday, July 7, to Thursday, July 9, with daytime temperatures expected to reach 45.5°C.
In New York, more than 378 people have visited emergency rooms (ERs) for heat-related illnesses, according to the city's health department.
