TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Atletico Madrid emerged victorious in the Madrid derby after defeating Real Madrid 2-1 in Matchweek 7 of the 2026/27 Spanish League season at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano on Sunday, September 20, 2026.
Alejandro Grimaldo and Jonathan David scored for Atletico, while Real Madrid managed only a late consolation goal through Antonio Rudiger.
This result lifts Atletico to second place in the La Liga standings with 16 points from seven matches.
Real Madrid dropped to third place with 15 points, while Barcelona continues to lead the table with a five-point advantage over Atletico Madrid, according to the official La Liga website as cited by Antara.
The match was tightly contested from the start. Atletico created a chance in the 15th minute through Jonathan David.
The Canadian forward met a cross with a header inside the six-yard box, but a Real Madrid player made a goal-line clearance.
Real Madrid responded through Aurelien Tchouameni in the 21st minute, but the midfielder's shot sailed well over the crossbar.
Vinicius Junior then had two consecutive chances. In the 24th minute, he found space inside the penalty area, but his finish went over the bar.
Two minutes later, Vinicius fired another shot from the edge of the box that also went over the crossbar.
There were no goals by the end of the first half; the teams headed to the dressing rooms with the score at 0-0.
Atletico applied immediate pressure after the break. In the 47th minute, Alex Baena unleashed a shot from outside the box aimed at the right side of the goal, but Thibaut Courtois made a brilliant save.
Disaster struck for Real Madrid three minutes later. Dean Huijsen committed a foul by pulling an Atletico player's jersey inside the penalty area, and referee Miguel Ortiz pointed to the penalty spot.
The referee then reviewed the incident via VAR. Following the check, the yellow card initially shown to Huijsen was rescinded and replaced with a straight red card, forcing Real Madrid to continue the match with 10 men. Alejandro Grimaldo stepped up to take the penalty in the 53rd minute. He waited for Courtois to move before placing the ball into the bottom-left corner, giving Atletico a 1-0 lead.
With the numerical advantage, Atletico doubled their lead six minutes later. Giuliano Simeone delivered a pass into the penalty area, which Jonathan David met with a first-time shot. The ball flew into the top of the net, making it 2-0.
Real Madrid continued to push to close the gap despite playing with ten men. Their efforts paid off in the 89th minute.
Bernardo Silva delivered a cross from a set-piece situation. Antonio Rudiger met it with a header from near the six-yard box, directing the ball toward the left side of the goal. The scoreline changed to 2-1.
The goal gave Real Madrid a chance to find an equalizer. However, Atletico managed to hold onto their lead until the final whistle.
Atletico Madrid secured a 2-1 victory in the Madrid Derby.
