TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The all-Indonesian men’s doubles final at the 2025 Australian Open on Sunday, November 23, saw fifth seeds Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Shohibul Fikri go down 20–22, 21–10, 18–21 to their junior compatriots Raymond Indra/Nikolaus Joaquin. The result handed Raymond/Nikolaus their first-ever Super 500 title.
The match was tightly contested from the start. Raymond/Nikolaus trailed 8–11 at the first-game interval, and fell further behind at 9–14 before staging a sharp turnaround with six straight points to take a 15–14 lead.
A tense exchange of points followed. Fajar/Fikri reached game point first at 20–19 after scoring twice in a row, but could not close out the opener. Their younger opponents replied with three unanswered points to snatch the first game 22–20.
Fajar/Fikri rebounded convincingly in the second game. After leading 11–8 at the interval, they kept control and pulled away without difficulty, taking the game 21–10 to force a decider.
The third game swung back in favor of Raymond/Nikolaus, who opened a 10–6 lead after another three-point burst. Fajar/Fikri caught up to level the score at 10–10, but the younger pair regained the advantage to enter the interval ahead 11–10.
From there, Raymond/Nikolaus held their nerve. Their solid defensive play frustrated Fajar/Fikri’s attempts to break through, allowing them to stretch the lead to 16–11 and later 18–13.
Fajar/Fikri trimmed the deficit to 18–16, but after a long, hard-hitting rally, Raymond/Nikolaus sealed the deciding game 21–18. The match lasted 1 hour and 7 minutes.
The victory marks a breakthrough season for Raymond/Nikolaus. They won their first title at the Super 100 Indonesia Masters in October and reached the final of the Super 300 Korea Masters earlier in November.
For Fajar/Fikri, the defeat extends a difficult run. Since debuting as a pair and winning the Super 1000 China Open in July, they have fallen short in four finals—most recently in Sunday’s Australian Open showdown.
