TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A recent report by Booking.com has designated Bali as a premier holiday home destination for tourists in the Asia Pacific region, particularly for travelers seeking unique culinary experiences. The report, titled "Taste of Home Asia Pacific," indicates a growing trend of travelers choosing holiday homes that provide the flexibility to dine, serve, and cook in authentic and localized settings.
"Bali is one key destination being sought, but almost every country is currently included in many searches for this type of accommodation," said Laura Houldsworth, Managing Director of Booking.com Asia Pacific, during a statement in Bali on September 24, 2025.
Holiday Homes
Houldsworth noted that the platform has seen a surge in holiday home listings from a variety of countries, offering diverse accommodation types. These include beachfront houses, traditional homes like the Japanese ryokan and South Korean hanok, as well as wooden huts in Vietnam and Thailand.
The options also extend to private villas, mountain cabins, and luxury camping. All these properties, she explained, are chosen for their ability to facilitate culinary experiences, whether through a private kitchen or access to local dining.
Culinary Travel as a Cultural Experience
Houldsworth emphasized that culinary experiences have evolved beyond simple mealtimes, becoming opportunities for cultural connection and the creation of lasting memories. Food, she said, is now a "cultural gateway" and not just a focal point of a trip.
The research highlights the significant influence that these immersive culinary experiences have on travelers' decisions.
"Today, travelers are seeking more personal and meaningful experiences. Therefore, holiday homes are emerging as an important part of the evolving trend," Houldsworth added.
The report's findings are based on a survey of over 8,000 travelers in the Asia Pacific region, including participants from Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, India, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, and Vietnam. The survey was conducted online from July 25 to 28, 2025, and was prepared by YouGov in collaboration with Red Havas and Booking.com. Respondents had previously booked or stayed in holiday homes or short-term rentals, both domestically and internationally.
