TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Bali Regional Government is currently drafting plans to operate water taxis as a strategic step to address the frequent traffic congestion in Bali. This transportation system is designed to offer a choice for residents and tourists, especially in the South Bali area, the center of tourist activities.

Bali Governor Wayan Koster has coordinated with the Ministry of Transportation regarding this plan. In the discussion, the Ministry of Transportation is ready to support the provision and operation of water taxis. The service will be focused on the route from I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport to the Nusa Dua area in Badung Regency. With this new transportation, it is expected that the public will have more options for travel, on land and sea routes.

Previously, Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwaghandi met with Minister of Tourism Widiyanthi Putri Wardhana to discuss various collaborative steps in improving transportation infrastructure in leading tourist destinations. One of the main focuses of the discussion was the development of water-based transportation to enhance tourist mobility and strengthen inter-regional connectivity.

The government assesses that water taxis will significantly reduce travel time from the airport to several major tourist destinations in Bali, such as Kuta Beach, Legian, Seminyak, Canggu, and Uluwatu. Additionally, this transportation is expected to alleviate the traffic congestion on land routes, which has been one of the main issues in Bali.

As an initial step to this project, a trial using jukung or traditional boats has been conducted to measure service efficiency. From the trial, travelling from I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport to Uluwatu can take 35-40 minutes using traditional boats. Meanwhile, with a more modern and powered water taxi, the travel time is expected to be shortened to around 25-30 minutes.

In addition to operating water taxis, the government is exploring other options to improve inter-regional connectivity in major tourist destinations, including plans to operate seaplanes in several strategic locations such as Bali, Labuan Bajo, and Sumba. This initiative aims to expedite access to priority tourist destinations and support the growth of the marine-based tourism industry in Indonesia.

The Ministry of Tourism also appreciates the success of the Ministry of Transportation in organizing transport services during Christmas and New Year 2024/2025, which are considered to have run smoothly and successfully. The government hopes to strengthen the synergy between the transport and tourism sectors to create an efficient, integrated and sustainable transport system in Indonesia.
