TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Bank Indonesia (BI) has withdrawn four denominations of rupiah banknotes from circulation, issued in 1979, 1980, and 1982. The central bank also urged the public to exchange these banknotes by the specified deadline.
"BI reminds the public who possess these four banknote denominations, issued in 1979, 1980, and 1982, to exchange them at the Bank Indonesia Head Office by April 30, 2025," Ramdan Denny Prakoso, Executive Director of BI’s Communication Department, said in a written statement on Monday, April 28.
The four withdrawn denominations include the Rp10,000 issued in 1979, the Rp5,000 issued in 1980, the Rp1,000 issued in 1980, and the Rp500 issued in 1982. These denominations were withdrawn according to Bank Indonesia’s Board of Directors Decision Letter No. 24/105/KEP/DIR dated March 31, 1992.
Ramdan added that BI routinely withdraws rupiah banknotes, though such withdrawals are made after careful consideration.
"This is done based on factors such as the lifespan of the money, the issuance of new denominations, and advancements in security features on banknotes," he explained.
According to BI’s official website, there have been 44 denominations of currency withdrawn, including 31 coins and 13 banknotes.
BI stated that the public can exchange these withdrawn banknotes within 10 years of their withdrawal. The exchange can be done at any commercial bank or BI office across Indonesia. After the deadline, these banknotes can no longer be exchanged.
