TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - US Senator Bernie Sanders on Sunday slammed President Donald Trump's remarks on the future of Gaza. As reported by Anadolu on Monday, the Jewish senator stressed that the war-torn territory should be rebuilt for the Palestinian people, not for wealthy tourists.
"Over 47,000 Palestinians killed. Another 111,000 wounded," Sanders wrote on the X platform. "Trump's response? Forcefully displace Palestinians so that Gaza can be turned into a 'future real estate project. A beautiful piece of land.' No. Gaza should be rebuilt for the Palestinian people, not for billionaire tourists."
Sanders' remarks came after Trump, in an interview aired on Monday, said that Palestinians who leave the besieged Gaza Strip under his controversial land ownership plan would not be allowed to return.
"We're going to build a safe community, a little bit away from where they are now, where all the dangers are. In the meantime, I'm going to own this area. Think of it as a real estate project for the future, a beautiful piece of land," Trump said in an interview with Fox News, reiterating his proposal to take over Gaza.
When the interviewer asked directly whether Palestinians would have a "right of return," Trump flatly replied, "No, they won't, because they'll have much better housing."
Trump's Controversial Plan for Gaza
Trump put forward his proposal amid a ceasefire that halted Israel's war on Gaza after 15 months.
His plan to take over Gaza has been widely rejected internationally, but Trump has insisted that it will go ahead. He has even repeatedly claimed that he would force Egypt and Jordan to accept Palestinian refugees, a claim that has been publicly denied by both countries and by the Palestinians themselves.
Trump’s proposal echoes an idea previously floated by his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, in March 2024.
At the time, the former presidential adviser praised the potential of Gaza’s real estate, which he considered “incredibly valuable” because of its location on the Mediterranean Sea.
“The real estate on the Gaza seafront could be very valuable if people focused on economic development,” Kushner said in an interview at Harvard University.
“It’s a very disadvantaged situation there, but if I look at it from an Israeli perspective, I would do my best to move the population out and tidy up the area,” he said.
Israel’s war on Gaza has devastated the area, with half of its housing infrastructure destroyed or damaged.
Nearly 2 million Palestinians have been displaced, while Gaza faces a major crisis of lack of sanitation, medical supplies, food and clean water. More than 48,200 Palestinians have been killed, the majority of them women and children.
