TEMPO.CO, Bandung - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) will look for the new crescent moon (rukyat hilal) to determine the beginning of Ramadan on Friday, February 28, 2025. This observation will be conducted across the archipelago, from Aceh to Papua.
A team from the BMKG Geophysical Station in Bandung planned to observe at the Albiruni Observatory of the Islamic University of Bandung (Unisba). When the sun sets on Friday, the moon's altitude in Bandung City is expected to be around 4 degrees high, with an elongation of 6 degrees and an illumination of 0.20 percent, and the moon will be 10.41 hours old.
"Based on this data, the hilal records by BMKG, [what we know from] astronomy, and the weather forecast, it is possible that the Ramadan hilal 1446 Hijriyah will not be seen, or the chance is very small in the city of Bandung," said Head of BMKG Geophysical Station in Bandung, Teguh Rahayu, in a written statement on Wednesday, February 26, 2025.
The weather forecast from the West Java Climatology Station stated that Bandung is predicted to have light rain on Friday from morning to night. This means it is very likely the hilal will not be seen. The observation of the new crescent moon will begin after the sun sets. In Bandung, the sun will set at 18:09:13 WIB.
BMKG will use computerized telescopes or binoculars combined with information technology for hilal observation. During the observation, the moon's light intensity will be recorded by a detector on the telescope, which automatically follows the moon as it moves across the western horizon. This information will be sent directly to the main computer at BMKG Headquarters to be saved and shared online.
The public can also watch the hilal observation on Friday, February 28, 2025, from late afternoon to evening online by accessing the BMKG website https://hilal.bmkg.go.id/livestream. Muslims are also asked to await the decision of the isbat meeting, which will be announced by the government on Friday night, to know when to start fasting in the month of Ramadan 1446 Hijri.
