TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued an early warning of high waves that have the potential to occur in several Indonesian waters from March 2nd to March 5th, 2025.
BMKG forecaster Muhammad Alfaridzi stated that the wind patterns in the northern part of Indonesia generally move from north to east with wind speeds ranging from 6-20 knots, while in the southern part they generally move from east to south with wind speeds ranging from 4-25 knots.
"The highest wind speeds were observed in the western Indian Ocean near the Mentawai Islands, the northern Pacific Ocean near Papua, and the northern Pacific Ocean near West Papua," he said in a written statement on Sunday, March 2nd, 2025.
He explained that these conditions can cause an increase in wave heights of 1.25 - 2.5 meters in the western Indian Ocean off Aceh, western Indian Ocean off Lampung, southern Indian Ocean off West Java, southern Indian Ocean off DI Yogyakarta, southern Indian Ocean off Bali, southern Indian Ocean off NTT, northern Pacific Ocean off West Papua, northern Pacific Ocean off Maluku, western Indian Ocean off Bengkulu, southern Indian Ocean off Banten, southern Indian Ocean off Central Java, southern Indian Ocean off East Java, southern Indian Ocean off NTB, northern Pacific Ocean off Papua, and the southern West Papua off the northern Pacific Ocean, and the Maluku Sea.
Meanwhile, higher waves ranging from 2.5 - 4.0 meters may occur in the western Indian Ocean near the Mentawai Islands and the western Indian Ocean near Nias Islands. "The potential for high waves in several regions can pose a risk to maritime safety," he said.
Therefore, BMKG advises the public to remain vigilant, especially for fishermen who operate with transportation modes such as fishing boats, to avoid wind speeds exceeding 15 knots and wave heights above 1.25 meters.
BMKG also urges barge ships to be wary of wind speeds exceeding 16 knots and wave heights above 1.5 meters. "Residents living and working in coastal areas that are at risk of high waves are requested to always stay vigilant," he said.
