TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has detected extreme high wave potential triggered by the activities of Tropical Cyclone Nokaen and Tropical Cyclone Seed 97S. Extreme high waves up to six meters are likely to occur off the coast of Indonesia from January 21-24, 2026.

Based on BMKG monitoring, Tropical Cyclone Nokaen is detected in the Philippine Sea, while the Tropical Cyclone Seed 97S is observed in the Timor Sea. Both are influencing the wind patterns in the northern part of Indonesia, moving northeast at a speed of 6-25 knots.

Meanwhile, in southern parts of Indonesia, the winds are moving northwest at 6-35 knots speed.

The highest wind speeds are observed in the Indian Ocean south of Banten to East Nusa Tenggara, the eastern part of the Java Sea, and the Flores Sea, which caused extreme high waves in these waters.

The most extreme impact of 4- to 6-meter-high waves is detected for the Indian Ocean south of West Java, Central Java, and East Java, or the southern sea.

Meanwhile, high waves in the range of 2.5 to 4 meters are likely to occur in strategic waters such as the northern part of the Malacca Strait, the northern Natuna Sea, and along the Indian Ocean from the west of Aceh to the south of East Nusa Tenggara. Eastern Indonesian regions such as the Pacific Ocean north of Maluku, Southwest Papua, and most of the Arafuru Sea are also warned for this high-waves category.

BMKG warns of moderate wave height category of 1.25 to 2.5 meters in the middle of the Malacca Strait, the northern and southern parts of the Karimata Strait, the Java Sea, the Makassar Strait, the Sulawesi Sea and the northern waters of Papua.

BMKG urges coastal communities and fishers and large cargo vessels to remain vigilant of the extreme high waves in the Indonesian waters during this period.
