TEMPO.CO, Bandung - Floods and landslides that hit Bogor and the Puncak area occurred when heavy to extreme rainfall poured from Sunday afternoon until the evening of March 2, 2025.
Based on radar image monitoring by Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), convective cloud seeds were significantly observed in parts of the southeastern Bogor Regency, including the Puncak region starting at 2:33 PM.
"Several points of cloud growth were also observed in the regencies and cities of Bogor, almost evenly," said the weather forecaster from the BMKG West Java Climatology Station, Retno Kartika, in a written statement on Monday, March 3, 2025.
The convective clouds that formed and developed began dissipating at 8:05 PM and continued into the night. According to her, this indicated moderate to extremely heavy rainfall in several areas of Bogor Regency from the afternoon to the evening.
Meanwhile, rainfall measurements from instruments around the affected areas confirmed moderate to extreme rainfall, often accompanied by strong winds and lightning, across various parts of Bogor Regency and City during the same period.
"This condition could lead to river overflows from upstream or peak areas, flowing into Bogor City and causing flooding along affected rivers," she explained.
According to atmospheric monitoring by the West Java Climatology Station, several factors are contributing to increased water vapor supply and the growth of rain clouds in the West Java region.
These factors include relatively warm sea surface temperatures and the presence of active Equatorial Rossby waves in the region.
Then, based on wind analysis at an altitude of 3000 feet, wind bending was observed in several areas of West Java, which could increase the supply of water vapor. As for atmospheric instability, it generally varies from light to strong, indicating the potential for the formation of convective clouds.
Extreme rain in Bogor Regency was observed in the Cibeureum area with rainfall intensity reaching 167.6 millimeters per day. Meanwhile, very heavy rain was observed by the BMKG in the Cibinong, Telaga Saat, Cilember, Sukajaya, Citeko, and Ciawi Dam areas.
Meanwhile, in the Bogor City area, very heavy rain was observed by the BMKG in Cisadane, IPB, Katulampa, and Bogor Botanical Gardens. Affected areas included Muarasari and Cipaku in South Bogor, Pasir Jaya and Gunung Baru in West Bogor, Tegal Gundil in North Bogor, and Cisarua, as well as the Puncak Bogor highway.
Some of the impacts gathered by the BMKG from reports of the Bogor City and Regency Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) and social media, a landslide measuring 6 meters high and 4 meters wide occurred behind the santri rest house building which fell into the Ciungun river flow in Lebak sari, South Bogor.
A landslide also blocked the road for residents in the Cipaku area of South Bogor. An 8-meter high and 9-meter long landslide also eroded the foundation of the bridge in Cibalagung, Pasir Jaya, West Bogor.
Landslides were also reported around Lemigas on the Puncak Bogor highway, then floods occurred in the Tugu Utara area of Cisarua District and Citeko, Bogor Regency, inundating residents' houses.
Referring to rainfall observation data for three consecutive days, according to the BMKG, there has been rainfall with light to very heavy intensity in several affected areas.
This condition could lead to unstable and prone land conditions, especially on steep or sloping land. BMKG predicts that in the next three days, there is potential for rainfall accompanied by lightning and strong winds in several areas of Bogor Regency and City.
