TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning for heavy rainfall, lightning, and strong winds that may occur in several Indonesian regions over the next week, from 9 to 15 January 2026. Dividing this early weather warning into two periods, The BMKG has requested that these areas be on alert for heavy and possibly intense rainfall.
During the first period, from 9-11 January, among the areas alerted to heavy and intense rainfall is North Maluku. This region has been hit by extreme rainfall, triggering major floods earlier this week. In addition, West Sumatra, one of the northern regions of Sumatra is still suffering from the effects of Cyclone Senyar, which hit at the end of November last year.
Apart from these, BMKG has also issued early weather warnings for the Riau Islands, Bengkulu, Lampung, Banten, West Java, East Java, West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, West Kalimantan, and South Papua. During the same period, strong winds are expected to potentially affect Southeast Maluku, the Riau Islands, South Papua, West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, Bali, East Java, Central Java, West Java, and South Sulawesi.
For the second period, from 12-15 January, The BMKG has issued an early warning for areas on the island of Java of heavy to intense rainfall. These areas include West Java, Central Java, Yogyakarta Special Region, and East Java. The only area outside Java is Papua.
These areas are also advised to be on alert for strong winds. Early warnings of strong winds have also been issued for Maluku, Bali, Bangka Belitung, West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, North Maluku, South Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, and Southwest Papua.
Over the next week, BMKG predicts that Indonesia's weather conditions will continue to be influenced by weak La Nina and the warmth of some water areas. There will also be an influence from the Madden-Julian Oscillation activity and its interaction with equatorial waves.
Furthermore, the convergence zone, which can intensify rain clouds, is expected to develop in several regions, including areas stretching from the Riau Islands and Jambi to the southern Indian Ocean, Yogyakarta, East Java, the Makassar Strait, the Flores Sea, and North Sulawesi and the Maluku Sea. This also includes the Java Sea and Papua.
"Entering early 2026, BMKG urges the public and stakeholders to increase vigilance regarding weather conditions that may change at any time, as well as the potential for hydrometeorological disasters due to extreme weather," reads the final part of the weekly weather outlook produced by BMKG's Public Meteorology Directorate on January 8, 2026.
