TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicts that extreme weather is likely to continue until early April 2025. BMKG Head Dwikorita Karnawati warned the public to be wary of hydrometeorological disaster threats during the Eid al-Fitr.
"Especially during the annual exodus and return of Eid al-Fitr. The intensity of rain in several areas is expected to remain high," she said in a written statement on Monday, March 10, 2025.
According to Dwikorita, rainfall remains high in several areas of Indonesia even though the dry season is on the horizon. During the first ten days of April 2025, which are predicted to be the period of the return exodus, brief heavy rain is still likely to fall.
During the Eid homecoming, the public is urged to be cautious of sea waves reaching approximately 2 meters in the southern waters of Sumatra, southern Java, and East Nusa Tenggara. The full moon phase at the end of this month also has the potential to cause tidal floods in coastal areas.
Dwikorita said that various flood incidents since early 2025 need to serve as a warning for improvements to drainage systems and environmental protection, especially in Jabodetabek. She stated that floods continue to occur despite lower rainfall intensity this year compared to 2020.
"Even though the rainfall is not as high as in previous years, the impact is much more severe this year," Dwikorita said.
As a mitigation measure, BMKG requested local governments to utilize the Infobmkg application, which provides weather forecast services for up to six days ahead. This forecast technology is also suitable for use during the exodus.
Dwikorita mentioned that the BMKG service provides information on rainfall intensity, air temperature, wind speed and direction, as well as the potential for high waves along the exodus routes. "Through good coordination between related agencies and regular weather monitoring, it is hoped that the exodus can proceed safely," she said.
