BMKG Reports M5.4 Earthquake Striking Tomini Bay; No Tsunami Threats

6 hours ago 16

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported a tectonic earthquake that jolted Tomini Bay in South Bolaang Mongondow, North Sulawesi, on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, this morning.

The BMKG analysis indicates that the earthquake has been updated to a magnitude of 5.4, with the epicenter at coordinates 0.13 Southern Latitude and 123.78 Longitude East. The offshore quake hit 59 kilometers southwest of Bolaang Uki, North Sulawesi, at a depth of 107 kilometers.

"Considering the epicenter location and the hypocenter depth, it was a medium earthquake triggered by rock deformation activity on the Sulawesi Sea plate," said the Director of Earthquake and Tsunami at BMKG, Daryono, in his statement on Tuesday.

"The source mechanism analysis results show that the earthquake has an oblique thrust movement mechanism," he added.

This earthquake was felt in the Gorontalo Regency with an intensity scale of II-III MMI, which means the vibrations were experienced by several people and caused light hanging objects to sway.

Modeling results indicate that no tsunami threats are recorded due to the tremor, and no aftershocks were reported as of 6:20 a.m. Western Indonesia Time (WIB).

Residents are advised to remain calm and not be influenced by unverifiable rumors. "Avoid cracked or damaged buildings due to the earthquake,” said Daryono.
