TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Head of Indonesia's Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM), Taruna Ikrar, highlighted the rising trend of illegal cosmetics distribution in beauty salons. According to him, this phenomenon reflects the close relationship between supply and demand in the beauty market, where salons are the right distribution channels for these illegal products.
"Beauty salons are the right place to market illegal cosmetic products because people come in drove there for beauty treatments. Whether for haircuts, body scrubs, or other treatments, they are exposed to unregistered cosmetic products," said Taruna Ikrar in a press conference at the BPOM Office, Central Jakarta, Monday, December 30, 2024.
Other than pharmaceutical facilities, he said, BPOM also took note of beauty salons that offer customers cosmetic products to use. "We are tasked with ensuring the safety, benefits, and quality of cosmetic products that circulate in the markets, including those sold in beauty salons," he said.
"Many illegal cosmetic products enter beauty salons because there is a demand for cheap products and promises of instant beauty."
Taruna said that these products are often distributed person-to-person or by other illegitimate means. Therefore, BPOM considers monitoring beauty salons as a crucial part of the agency’s duties.
"In our duties, we are committed to supervising every distribution channel, including beauty salons, to ensure that no products endanger consumers. We will continue to supervise and take strict action against products that violate regulations," said Taruna.
He explained that BPOM prioritizes not only preventive measures but works alongside other parties to reduce the distribution of illegal cosmetic products that can endanger public health. Taruna emphasized the importance of public awareness in maintaining product safety standards in the Indonesian cosmetics market.
