TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Researchers from Indonesia's National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) conducted a study on predicting water availability in the Nusantara Capital City (IKN) and its surrounding areas in East Kalimantan using an artificial neural network (ANN) approach. The model built yielded a very high accuracy, reaching 97.7 percent with a kappa index of 0.96.
The researcher from the BRIN Climate and Atmosphere Research Center, Laras Toersilowati Hasil, stated that the prediction results showed that the percentage of water availability in the IKN region is divided into 0.51 percent high water/HW, 20.41 percent vegetation water/VW, and 79.08 percent non-water/NW.
"Water availability in IKN is becoming an important issue. If not anticipated from the beginning, large-scale development in the region could face the risk of water crisis," she said in a written statement on Monday, September 22, 2025.
According to Laras, this research not only has academic value but also practical benefits for policy formulation. Besides numbers and maps, she said that satellite data could also serve as a basis for making strategic decisions regarding development.
As the threat of global climate change increases, Laras mentioned that BRIN is committed to intensifying satellite data-based research while strengthening collaboration with various parties. "Therefore, Indonesia can develop early warning systems, adaptation strategies, and environmentally-friendly urban planning policies to tackle climate change," she added.
The Earth and Maritime Research Organization, through the Climate and Atmosphere Research Center, presented the latest research results on using satellite data to analyze urban climate change in Indonesia. This study has been ongoing since 2022 and focuses on five case studies. In this presentation, however, the BRIN team only discussed three.
Laras explained that this research stems from the phenomenon of climate change intensifying in urban areas due to urbanization, changes in land cover, and increased pollutant emissions. She emphasized the importance of satellite data as the main instrument in modern climate research.
She also mentioned that satellite data helps us to see detailed patterns of climate change, both spatially and temporally. "With this information, we can better understand how cities develop and their impact on the environment," she said.
