Canada's Mark Carney Wins in Election Overshadowed by Trump's Threats

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney from the governing Liberal Party has won the election that took place on Monday, April 28, 2025, securing its fourth consecutive victory.

As reported by NDTV, Carney assured the voters that his experience in managing economic crises prepared him to face US President Donald Trump. The trade war and the threat of annexation of Canada by Donald Trump have angered the Canadian people. Carney made the relationship with the United States a key issue in his campaign.

Prior to becoming prime minister, the 60-year-old man had never held public office. He replaced Justin Trudeau as prime minister last month. His campaign was focused on anti-Trump messaging.

Previously, he served as the governor of the central bank in the United Kingdom and Canada. He convinced the voters that his experience in the global financial sector enabled him to navigate Canada through the trade war. Carney has pledged to expand foreign trade relations to curb Canada's dependence on the United States.

In his victory speech, Mark Carney vowed that he would stand up to Trump, assuring that Canada has many options to make the country prosperous.

"And if the United States no longer wants to be in the forefront of the global economy, Canada will," Carney said. "We are masters in our own home. We will build millions of housing units. We will become an energy superpower. We will provide good careers in skilled trades and one economy, not 13. Because this is Canada, and we decide what happens here," he said, as quoted by Al Jazeera.

He also stated that he would fight in every way to get the best deal for Canada. "We will protect our workers and businesses, and above all, we will build an independent future for our great country, a future that makes the greatest country on earth even better," he said.

Over the past few months, Trump has repeatedly stated that Canada should become the 51st US state. He also ridiculed Justin Trudeau, the former prime minister of Canada, as the governor of the state of Canada.
