TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Canadian Ambassador to Indonesia Jess Dutton has spoken out about reports of U.S. President Donald Trump's plan to make Canada the 51st state of the United States. He emphasized that Canada rejects the plan.
"We are very clear. Canada will never become the 51st state of the United States," Dutton said at the International Women's Day celebration at Le Meridien Jakarta on Thursday, March 6, 2025.
Dutton affirmed that Trump's plan is not an issue recognized by Canada. "This is not a matter and not something we have ever considered as Canadian citizens," he said.
When asked about the Indonesian government's stance, Dutton believes that Indonesia will respect the sovereignty of other countries, including Canada, which has a long-established history of sovereignty.
On Monday, March 3, 2025, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau revealed his priorities in a meeting with King Charles. Trudeau mentioned that the meeting with the British monarch was intended to protect his country's sovereignty following Trump's recent suggestion of making Canada the 51st state of the United States.
As reported by Reuters, Trudeau said that nothing is more important to his people than maintaining sovereignty and independence.
In late February, King Charles invited Trump to make his second historic state visit to Britain, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer handing over the invitation during a meeting in front of the world media at the Oval Room.
"I hope to sit down with His Excellency tomorrow, as usual we will discuss important matters for Canada and Canadians, and I can tell you that nothing seems more important to Canadians than maintaining our sovereignty and independence as a nation," Trudeau told reporters on Sunday, March 2, 2025.
