TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has extended an invitation to President Prabowo Subianto to attend the 2025 Group of Seven (G7) Summit, scheduled to be held in Kananaskis, Alberta, Canada, in mid-June.
Carney personally conveyed the invitation to Prabowo through a formal written invitation and a phone call on Friday, June 6, 2025.
"In addition to the formal written invitation, the invitation for President Prabowo to attend as an honored guest at the G7 Summit was also conveyed directly by the Prime Minister of Canada, His Excellency Mark Carney, through a phone call yesterday," said Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya in an official statement on Saturday, June 7, 2025.
During their conversation, Carney also expressed appreciation for Prabowo's leadership. He conveyed his hope that Prabowo would attend the forum to strengthen inclusive dialogue on global challenges. "In the phone conversation, PM Mark Carney also expressed appreciation for President Prabowo's leadership and hopes for the Head of State's presence at the G7 Summit," Teddy added.
The G7 Summit is an international forum comprising seven of the world's largest advanced economies: Italy, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, along with the European Union. This annual meeting serves as a strategic platform to discuss key global issues, including economic growth, financial stability, climate change, and geopolitical dynamics.
"The Group of Seven (G7) is an informal group consisting of 7 of the world's major advanced economies, where its members meet annually at the G7 Summit to discuss global economic and geopolitical issues," Teddy explained.
Teddy further highlighted that the invitation to Indonesia as an honored guest signifies international recognition of Indonesia's strategic position in the Indo-Pacific region and its contributions to global stability and cooperation.
Last year, Indonesia also participated in the G7 Summit held in Fiuggi, Italy, on November 25-26, 2024. Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono attended that summit at the invitation of the Italian foreign minister, who also extended invitations to other Indo-Pacific countries, namely the Philippines, India, and South Korea.
During the meeting, Sugiono articulated Indonesia's commitment under Prabowo's leadership to enhance the welfare of its people and make a positive contribution to the Indo-Pacific region through sustainable and inclusive development. Sugiono also reaffirmed Indonesia's consistent efforts to make ASEAN the driving force for regional collaboration, as reflected in the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP). He also expressed appreciation to the G7 for its support and collaboration with ASEAN through various ASEAN mechanisms.
