TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A total of 51 inmates of Class II B Kutacane Penitentiary in Southeast Aceh Regency, Aceh Province, escaped on Monday afternoon, March 10, 2025.
The Public Relations Officer of the Directorate General of Corrections under the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections (Ditjen PAS), Rika Aprianti, confirmed the escape of the inmates.
"The attempt of the Kutacane Penitentiary inmates to escape indeed happened and it has been handled and controlled by the prison authorities in cooperation with the police, military, and local government," Rika said in a written statement on Tuesday, March 11, 2025.
Rika stated that a total of 51 inmates had escaped, with approximately 14 already recaptured or having surrendered, while the remaining 35 are still being pursued.

Chronology of the Inmates' Escape
The prison break occurred on Monday evening, March 10, 2025, just before iftar (the time for breaking fast). According to Antara, the inmates managed to force their way through three locked security doors, with most of them being convicted in narcotics-related cases.
Following the breach, the inmates fled through the main prison entrance, while others escaped via the roof. Prison authorities acknowledged that the facility was overcrowded. Additionally, there had been demands from the inmates for the provision of a "love room" within the prison.
Footage of the escape was widely shared on social media, showing dozens of men running chaotically, scaling fences, and exiting through an already open gate onto a bustling street filled with street vendors.
The escapees were seen wearing t-shirts and shorts, with some not wearing shirts at all. In their desperate flight, they ran through anything in their path, including vendors’ stalls lining the road in front of the prison. The video also captured several individuals being apprehended by authorities.
Yan Rusmanto, Head of the Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections for Aceh Province, revealed that Class IIB Kutacane Penitentiary housed a total of 368 people, consisting of 318 inmates and the rest being detainees.
Meanwhile, Rika Aprianti, PR Officer of Ditjen PAS, reported that by around 9:00 PM, the situation in the prison had stabilized, with the prison chief personally entering the block to engage in dialogue and interact directly with the inmates.
"The prison authorities, in cooperation with the police, military, and the local government, have handled and controlled the situation. The Regent of Southeast Aceh (M. Salim Fakhry) was present to have a dialogue with the inmates," said Rika.
When asked about the motive behind the inmates' escape, Rika said they are still investigating. "The team is still working on it," she said.
Nevertheless, Ditjen PAS ensured that food service to the inmates continued according to the regulations. In addition, the security was tightened with the assistance of the security forces.
"The prison is currently guarded with the help of the police and military," explained Rika.
