TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Since assuming the presidency of the United States, Donald Trump has implemented various tariffs and import duties, as reported by Reuters. Trump has imposed both universal tariffs on foreign imports and tariffs aimed at specific regions or countries in an effort to compel other nations to comply with his policy demands.
Mexico and Canada
These two countries are among America's largest trading partners, with Mexico holding the top position as of November 2024. Trump announced his intention to impose a 25 percent import tax on goods from Mexico and Canada, initially scheduled to take effect on February 4, as retaliation for migration and fentanyl trade.
However, before the tariffs were implemented, Trump canceled and postponed them until March 1, pending negotiations with both countries. Canada exports crude oil and other energy products, along with cars and automotive parts, as part of the North American automotive manufacturing chain. Mexico exports various goods to the United States in the industrial and automotive sectors.
China
Trump imposed a 10 percent tariff on Chinese imports. China announced it would retaliate with duties on certain American goods in the near future. During Trump's first term, both countries engaged in a prolonged trade war that negatively impacted both economies.
European Union
Trump views the European Union and other countries as having problematic trade surpluses with the United States. He stated that products from these countries would be subject to tariffs, or he would demand they purchase more oil and gas from America. However, America's gas export capacity is already nearing its limit.
On Wednesday, February 26, 2025, Trump announced that his administration would decide to impose a 25 percent tariff on products from the European Union, including automobiles. "We have made a decision. We will announce it soon, and the tariff in general is 25 percent," said Trump, as reported by Antara.
He added that this tariff would apply broadly, particularly to the automotive sector and other goods. As quoted by Reuters, Trump has long accused the European Union's trade practices of being unfair.
Russia
Russia and other countries have been threatened by Trump with taxes, tariffs, and sanctions if an agreement to end the war in Ukraine is not reached immediately.
Colombia
After Colombia refused to accept flights carrying migrants to be deported from America, Trump stated that he would impose a 25 percent tariff on Colombian goods.
India
During his presidential campaign, Trump accused India of being a trade violator and used tariffs to address trade imbalances.
