TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) has reshaped the way people work and operate in ways unlike anything before. As the technology continues to advance, its influence stretches across borders, reaching nearly every corner of the world.
Alongside AI’s wide-scale reach, the pace of its adoption has also reached an unprecedented level. As noted by Voronoi, ChatGPT, though only three years old, reached one million users within just five days of its release. This stands in stark contrast to Apple’s highly successful iPhone, which took eight years to reach the same milestone.
This rapid adoption curve shows how quickly AI is evolving and integrating into daily life. But how extensive is AI usage today? To answer this, Microsoft introduced the AI User Share metric, which quantifies adoption based on the percentage of each country’s working-age population actively using the technology.
Key Factors Driving and Hindering AI Adoption
Across the 147 nations analyzed, Microsoft found that interest in AI is remarkably high in developing countries, often matching the enthusiasm seen in advanced economies. However, the biggest challenge lies in internet accessibility in lower-income nations, which limits adoption despite a strong appetite for AI tools.
Additionally, AI adoption is strongly linked to economic strength. This sheds light on why the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, and Norway top the global ranking of countries that adopt AI the fastest, possessing GDP per capita figures: $47,663, $87,925, and $103,888, respectively.
The UAE leads the world, recording an AI User Share of 59.4%, meaning more than half of its working-age population regularly engages with AI tools. Singapore follows closely with 58.6%.
Despite these high adoption rates at the top, a significant global gap remains: 85% of the world’s population lives in countries that adopt AI tools where fewer than 15% of the working-age population use them. Nevertheless, the technology is set to maintain its momentum, especially following major product launches, such as China’s DeepSeek in early 2025.
List of Countries That Adopt AI the Fastest
These are the top 10 countries that adopt AI the fastest based on Microsoft’s AI User Share metric (percentage of working-age users):
United Arab Emirates - 59.4%
Singapore - 58.6%
Norway - 45.3%
Ireland - 41.7%
France - 40.9%
Spain - 39.7%
New Zealand - 37.6%
United Kingdom - 36.4%
Netherlands - 36.3%
Qatar - 35.7%
