TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Culture has launched a vinyl record containing a compilation of eight versions of Indonesia’s national anthem, 'Indonesia Raya'. The launch coincided with National Music Day on March 9, 2025, and took place after a dialogue at the ministry office to commemorate National Music Day.
The Minister of Culture Fadli Zon stated that 'Indonesia Raya', composed by Wage Rudolf Supratman or WR Supratman, is more than just a song: it’s a symbol of national struggle, unity, and the determination in maintaining the integrity and glory of the nation. “Through this song, we are also reminded to continue the preservation of Indonesian musical culture as a valuable heritage,” said Fadli on Sunday, March 9, 2025.
Among the eight versions of the song, one is an instrumental version first presented at the Second Youth Congress in 1928, which was then recorded by Yo Kim Tjan. Meanwhile, the version circulating during the Japanese occupation, according to Fadli, has a slightly faster tempo.
Some other versions of ‘Indonesia Raya’ included in the vinyl record include a 1951 rearrangement of the song by Jos Cleber, as well as several others from the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. “Thus, we all know how Indonesia Raya underwent several transformations, a journey over time until we got the version we have today,” he said.
Minister Fadli emphasized that the Ministry of Culture strives to support the Indonesian music ecosystem through the protection of intellectual property rights, cross-sector collaboration, and culture-based innovation. “Music, like culture, must be able to become a unifying force for the nation and serve as an instrument of Indonesian cultural diplomacy on the world stage,” said Fadli.
The Gerindra Party politician stated that the production of the vinyl record will be limited to around a thousand copies, but affirmed that the digital versions will be widely accessible in the future. “We will distribute it, maybe to schools, on websites, and so on,” he said.
During the same occasion, a representative of the WR Supratman family, Budi Harry, the grandson of his sibling, appreciated the Ministry of Culture for preserving the song 'Indonesia Raya'. “We, the extended family of WR Supratman, express our gratitude to the Ministry of Culture for the launch of this vinyl album. This is very important,” said Budi. “Preserving the national anthem 'Indonesia Raya' is crucial so that it is not forgotten by future generations.”
Fadli also mentioned that to date, several Indonesian musical instruments have been recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage, such as Angklung (2010), Gamelan (2021), Tari Saman (2011, including its accompanying music), and the latest one, Kolintang (2024). “Therefore, we must try to bolster public appreciation of Indonesian music. It is vast and diverse, reflecting the cultural and ethnic diversity across the archipelago,” he said.
