TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia is set to begin a major railway electrification push on May 20, 2026, in a project aimed at modernizing transport infrastructure while supporting environmental targets.
“We will have groundbreaking for the electrification of Jakarta–Cikampek, Jakarta–Sukabumi, and Jakarta–Cilegon,” Dony said, as quoted by Antara on Wednesday, April 29, 2026.
Dony, who also serves as Head of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) Holding BP, said the electrification program is intended not only to modernize railway services but also to stimulate growth in new urban areas along the routes.
He added that the initiative is expected to reduce pollution and improve transport efficiency. “By electrifying, this reduces urbanization,” he said, referring to efforts to better distribute population growth away from major urban centers.
He noted that railway electrification has been set as one of the key performance indicators (KPIs) for the sector. “I always say that railways only have two KPIs: one is safety, and the other is electrification,” Dony said.
The program follows a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in October 2025 between PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) and PT PLN (Persero) at the Jakarta Railways Center Auditorium. The agreement outlines cooperation on accelerating railway electrification to improve efficiency, reliability, and support Indonesia’s net zero emission target by 2060.
PT KAI President Director Bobby Rasyidin said the partnership opens significant opportunities to expand electric rail services across potential regions.
He added that this marks a major step in developing electrification projects without relying on the state budget, instead using a business-to-business (B2B) scheme between KAI and PLN.
For PT KAI, the project is expected to enhance service quality, comfort, and travel speed. Meanwhile, PLN said the expansion strengthens the use of cleaner energy in the transportation sector, supporting a broader shift toward low-carbon infrastructure.
