TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Israel's attack on Palestine in October 2023 triggered a boycott against products from companies involved in human rights violations in Palestine. A similar movement also occurred in Indonesia. Various product lists labeled as supporters of Israel circulated, one of which mentioned Danone Indonesia.
Responding to the allegations of affiliation with Israel, Danone Indonesia clarified, "Because we have no political affiliation. Danone supports the Indonesian government's stance in favor of Palestinian independence," said Corporate Communication Director of Danone Indonesia, Arif Mujahidin to Tempo, Sunday, November 17, 2024.
He added that the majority shareholder of the packaged water producer Aqua also does not have offices or production facilities in Israel.
In many countries, boycott lists have had a significant impact. Several companies have reported a decline in sales over the past year. Arif himself is unwilling to confirm the impact of the boycott on their sales due to various factors affecting sales. However, the company's image is certainly tarnished.
Danone is not included in the list of companies directly involved in Israel's military aggression as released by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights of the United Nations since June 30, 2023. However, the boycott list that includes Danone's name is still circulating. Arif suspects this is part of unhealthy business competition.
That's why Danone is trying to correct the circulating information. "We respond by demonstrating actions like supporting the Indonesian government and working together to provide assistance," said Arif.
He claims that both Danone as a company and its employees regularly provide aid to Palestine. The company also strives to maintain product quality as this is still a primary consideration for customers when choosing products. Arif mentioned that these efforts have begun to yield results now.
