Did TikTok Lay Off Over 1,200 Tokopedia Employees?

8 hours ago 22

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Said Iqbal, Special Presidential Advisor for Labor and Worker Welfare, is planning to visit the office of TikTok Indonesia in Kuningan, South Jakarta, tomorrow. Iqbal suspects Tokopedia, the e-commerce company owned by TikTok, has imposed mass layoffs for 90% of its employees.

Said suspected that TikTok laid off the employees after acquiring Tokopedia and managing it from its China headquarters. If this allegation is true, he would file a lawsuit against TikTok under the International Labour Organization Convention No. 193 on decent work in the platform economy, including decent work for digital/gig workers.

"Tomorrow at 10 a.m., we will visit the TikTok office," he said on Monday, July 6, 2026, while expressing his regret over the alleged layoffs.

According to him, TikTok has invested more than US$1.5 billion or around Rp23 trillion as a long-term commitment to support Tokopedia's operations.

Meanwhile, Said Iqbal's upcoming visit to the TikTok office aimed to ensure that the 1,250 employees who were laid off by Tokopedia will receive their rights.

Responding to the reported mass layoffs at Tokopedia, President Director Stephanie Susilo said the company is currently running an internal mobility for its employees, but remained mum on how many workers are affected by the policy.

"There is no termination of employment within TikTok or Tokopedia Group," she said on Monday.

Some of Tokopedia employees have opted to take the compensation packages to work elsewhere, while others have been transferred to other companies under the TikTok-Tokopedia business group.

"We are currently recruiting for more than 100 positions in Indonesia," he said.

Meanwhile, Corporate Secretary of PT GoTo Gojek Tokopedia, R. A. Koesoemohadiani, said the company respected all measures taken by Tokopedia to adjust its organization.

Koesoemohadiani ensured that the measure had limited impact on GoTo's financial and non-financial aspects. "Because our company's ownership of Tokopedia was diluted to 24.99% in January 2024. Therefore, the company no longer consolidates the actions taken by Tokopedia," said R.A. Koesoemohadiani, on Saturday, July 4, 2026, as quoted from Antara.

"There is no material impact on GoTo from PT Tokopedia's net income or loss," she said, adding that there would also be no impact on GoTo's e-commerce service fees received from Tokopedia.

Since the impact is limited, she said GoTo has no plans to take actions "in the near future" regarding its ownership of PT Tokopedia.

There are circulating rumors on social media that TikTok, through its business entity in Indonesia, PT Tokopedia, has conducted mass layoffs of 90% of its employees. However, until this news is aired, there is no official statement from related parties confirming the validity of these rumors.

Tokopedia is controlled by TikTok Pte Ltd after GoTo divested the majority of its shares in early 2024.
